Befriender - Adults aged 16+

Volunteers are matched up on a one-to-one basis with a vulnerable adult. The matches meet regularly either weekly or fortnightly for a few hours at a time. The aim is to engage in purposeful activities within the community which will help to reduce social isolation and feelings of loneliness. It is also about continuing to support the adult to engage in their own community and have positive social connections.

Experience required

No prior experieince, qualifications or skills required. Patience, understanding, tolerance, open-minded, non-judgemental, have the ability to motivate, ability to listen, empathy, good sense of humour, ability to try new activities and have fun.

Travel details

Shetland wide. If the volunteer has a car it can be used for outings, otherwise travel is by public transport. Travelling is considered in the matching process.

Training sessions to be completed before match.

Restrictions

Minimum age: 17
We need references and a PVG to help ensure that all volunteers are suitable to be matched on a one to one basis with a vulnerable person.

Frequency & commitment
Times vary. Start dates are at various times throughout the year (following training)Weekdays.

Volunteers (aged 17-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
