Patient Transport Volunteer

St John Scotland Patient Transport services are a lifeline for people who rely on them to get to hospital for life-saving treatments.

As a St John Scotland Patient Transport driver you are the friendly face patients see when they’re picked up at home on their way to treatment, or from the hospital once it’s complete. You’re the person who makes life easier, who they can rely on… and have a blether with!

You must:



  • Live locally to Kirkcaldy or Dunfermline

  • Be between 21 – 80 years old

  • Hold a full driving license and be a competent driver

  • Have held a full driving license for at least two years

  • Great sense of responsibility, commitment, and friendliness


Experience required

Volunteers must hold a full driving licence (for 2 years) and be a competent driver. They should have an outgoing and welcoming personality, and the ability to communicate with patients and fellow drivers accordingly. The role requires a great sense of responsibility and commitment.

Travel details

Volunteer drivers collect passengers from their homes at a pre-arranged time, convey them to the clinic and return them home after treatment. Clinics currently run in Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy and Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, and volunteers will be based in one of these locations. They have a number of St John vehicles which drivers can use for transportation of patients.

Travel expenses

Volunteers travel expenses are reimbursed at 45p per mile when using own vehicle. This happens once a month upon receipt of an expenses form and receipts (if available)

Support
Training details

  • You will receive all the necessary training and support from relevant Areas’ PT team and SJS staff team

  • You will be equipped with the SJS PT Uniform and an
    identification badge
