Learning Volunteer

Learning Volunteers will join an enthusiastic and diverse team who deliver world-class experiences at New
Lanark. The purpose of this role is to assist the Heritage and Visitor Attraction Teams in engagement with
local schools, children, and young people. Learning Volunteers will have the chance to develop their skills
by engaging with children of all ages during their visits to New Lanark. They will assist with the logistical
support of Learning groups as well as communicating the site’s history to them in an engaging and
informative way. There are also opportunities for volunteers to develop their skills further by delivering tours
and sessions themselves.

What will you be doing?


  • Meeting and greeting learning groups on their arrival to site and providing directions

  • Supporting and assisting with the delivery of learning sessions on site

  • Assisting staff with the organisation and preparation of learning resources

  • Supporting and assisting with the planning of learning sessions where necessary

  • Developing your knowledge of New Lanark

  • Sharing the site’s history with groups in a fun and engaging way

  • Develop your facilitation skills with a view to delivering learning sessions to groups if comfortable


What skills can you develop through this role?



  • Experience of working in the heritage sector

  • Experience of working with children and young people

  • Experience speaking to large groups of people

  • Confidence in leading events and groups of participants

  • Working as part of the Heritage Team and planning around different requirements


Travel details:
New Lanark is around an hour's drive from Glasgow (25 miles/40 kms) or Edinburgh (35 miles/56 Kms) and is well sign-posted from all major routes. Postcode for SatNav. ML11 9BY Parking is available for volunteers free of charge in the village.


2 trains run every hour (1 every hour on Sundays) from Glasgow Central or Motherwell to Lanark railway station (1.5 miles/2.5 km from New Lanark). Local buses and taxis are then available at the bus stance, adjacent to Lanark Railway station and Lanark Visit Scotland Information Centre. There is a bus service between Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow and Lanark. Details of this service are available by calling Stuart's Coaches on freecall 01555 773533. Please note this service does not run on a Sunday.

Training details

New Volunteers will be asked to attend a half day induction to get to know the site and their role more fully. On going training will be provided in supporting and facilitating with Learning groups.

Frequency & commitment
On a given day of volunteering, we ask volunteers to commit 4 hours of their time. The frequency of volunteering can be determined by the volunteer, e.g. once weekly, once fortnightly, once monthly.
