Do you have lived experience of mental health problems? Are you ready to give something back to your community?
“I would say it’s like a harbour in the storm.”
Keep The Heid Mental Health Cafés provide a welcoming space to discuss mental health. Facilitated by a mental health professional and a peer volunteer with lived experience, the cafés run weekly in Tranent, North Berwick, and Haddington from 7–9 pm. Sessions are free, open to anyone over 16, and require no referral, booking, or formal diagnosis.
We’re seeking volunteers to help facilitate sessions by welcoming attendees and sharing a personal reflection on something that impacted their mental health that week. There’s also a wee bit of washing up to do. Commitment is flexible—you can volunteer weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or as a standby.
Volunteers receive an induction, training, and ongoing support through regular feedback forums. Our volunteers find the role rewarding, gaining peer support skills, feeling “useful” and helping to reduce the stigma around mental health.
“I have a responsibility to speak and share and being able to talk if I have had a bad week really helps me too.”
“It’s lovely to be part of something bigger than me, supporting and being supported.”
“I’m so proud to be part of this movement.”
If you think this might be for you, contact Emma Jackson at keeptheheidcafe@gmail.com. We encourage you to attend a session to see how it works, then chat with Emma to explore next steps. If it’s a fit, we’ll guide you through the induction programme.
