Musselburgh Friendship Group – Volunteer Host

Dementia Friendly East Lothian is committed to supporting people living with dementia and unpaid carers to exercise their rights, to have choices over the things that matter to them and to be respected and valued citizens. We are looking for 18+ aged volunteers to help with weekly drop-in sessions. The session run from 10 – 12.30 every Thursday in Musselburgh.
You are likely to be the right person if you are sociable, enjoy being with other people and can help to create a positive and welcoming environment.

As a friendship group host you will:
• Welcome friends to the group, chat with friends while enjoying a cuppa and get involved taking part in activities and outings
• Listen to friends’ ideas for things to do and organise activities, particularly if you have a skill you would like to share
• On a 1-1 basis, support friends who may have sensory challenges to enable them to participate fully
• Help with the preparation of refreshments and the washing up!
• Learn new skills, and take part in training and development provided by Dementia Friendly East Lothian
• Give something back to the local community, meet other like-minded people and have fun!
• Be a valued member of our small, friendly team, with a say in how we work

If you have a genuine interest in working with older people and could reliably volunteer a few hours each week, please get in touch and help make a difference in our community and to the lives of our older people.

Experience required
We are looking for someone who likes being with people, is sociable with a sense of fun and responsibility. You will have experience of hosting - creating a positive and welcoming environment. You will be able to demonstrate empathy, patience and ensure that everyone is able to participate. You will be flexible and adaptable, knowing that it is often more important to listen than speak and understands that doing the washing up is just as important as anything else. You will balance this with a clear understanding and commitment to following DFEL values and policies, including teamwork, reliability and confidentiality.
