Companion Volunteer (Orkney)

We're looking for volunteers to support people affected by a terminal illness in their community by visiting them on a weekly basis. You could be meeting someone for a chat, helping someone take part in the things they enjoy or giving a carer some time off to relax.

We know that living with the effects of a terminal illness can be isolating and our service is here to make sure nobody feels alone. If you could be the person to make someone's day brighter then we would love to hear from you today.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience?
Meet new people and be part of our amazing new team base on Orkney. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys socialising and wants to make a difference in their local area. We also offer you full training when you join us so if you are looking to gain some new skills relevant to a role in health and social care then this could be the opportunity for you.

Experience required

Our ideal volunteer is someone who is able to deal sensitively with the needs of our clients and who has good conversational skills. Some basic IT skills will be necessary as you will be required to submit a report after each visit by email. A mature approach to life and a sense of humour will both be highly desirable qualities. Access to own vehicle will be useful but is not a necessity.

Travel details

This role covers the community across Orkney, we will take into account your location and ability to travel when matching you with a client.

Travel expenses

We pay reasonable out of pocket expenses including the cost of travel or mileage if using own vehicle. These are reimbursed monthly by bank transfer.

Training details

All of our volunteers will receive an induction training session when they join that covers the basics of the role, safeguarding, general palliative care knowledge and personal safety. We also offer quarterly Peer Support sessions where you will be able to meet some of your fellow volunteers and optional training in relevant topics from time to time. You will be supported by our friendly team while you are matched with a client.

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
