VAO is looking for new directors - help to support and shape Orkney's third sector!
Voluntary Action Orkney (VAO) is the Third Sector Interface (TSI) for Orkney. It is our role to support and develop the local third sector. This is the community groups, charities, voluntary organisations and volunteers across the islands.
Our Board of Directors play a vital part in shaping our strategic direction and ensuring we deliver effectively for the communities we serve. We currently have vacancies on our board and are looking for people who can bring fresh perspectives, skills, and energy to help us achieve our objectives.
We are particularly keen to hear from people with knowledge or experience in:
- Marketing and Communications – promoting our work and engaging stakeholders;
- Business Development and Income Generation – building sustainability for VAO and the third sector;
- HR and Workforce Development – supporting good governance and organisational growth;
- Digital and IT Skills – helping us modernise and improve our systems;
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion – ensuring our board reflects the communities we serve.
Previous experience as a charity trustee is welcome but not essential – we provide induction, training, and ongoing support.
To become a director, you will need:
- A commitment to the values of fairness, transparency, and community impact;
- The ability to work collaboratively and contribute to strategic decisions;
- Enthusiasm to support Orkney’s thriving third sector;
- We warmly welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and life stages, whether you are just starting your career, mid-career, or retired and looking for a way to give back.
As a director, you will gain:
- An opportunity to make a real difference for communities across Orkney;
- Experience of governance and leadership in the third sector;
- Professional development and networking with passionate, skilled peers;
If you would like to talk about the role before applying, contact Morven Brooks by email: morven.brooks@vaorkney.org.uk to arrange an informal conversation.
There is no fixed closing date – applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the desired number of Directors have been appointed.
Volunteers (aged 11-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
