Opportunity Summary
Following the success of the past two years, Silverburn is partnering with Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity and bringing back Flamingo Beach for another year! Flamingo Beach will be located inside the shopping centre and will be open to children and families visiting. For an entry fee, visitors will gain access to the beach and have the opportunity to play in the sand, build sand castles, and play with beach toys. Parents and carers will have a comfortable decking area to relax while their children enjoy the space.

The indoor beach will be open each day from Friday,20th June to Sunday, 24th August, and we’re looking for weekend volunteers to help support this exciting activity.


Volunteer Tasks


Welcome families to the beach and collect entry fees

Support children and families to ensure everyone is safe and happy


Staff the small retail space beside the beach, selling themed merchandise


Help maintain a positive and fun atmosphere for all visitors

Shift Times


9:30am to 1:30pm


1:30pm to 5:00pm


Weekend shifts only (Saturday and/or Sunday)

Volunteer Support Information

Induction & Training


All volunteers receive a full induction before their first shift.


Training includes:



Health & safety procedures for the Flamingo Beach area


Handling entry fees and basic cash procedures


Customer service guidance for interacting with families


Retail setup for merchandise sales


Supervision & Onsite Support


Each shift has a GCHC staff member or experienced lead volunteer present.


Volunteers are always supported while on duty—whether it’s their first or fifth shift.


Help is on hand to deal with any unexpected issues or questions from the public

Wellbeing & Inclusion


GCHC is committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming space for all volunteers.


Volunteers can share any access or support needs during onboarding.

Recognition


 


Volunteers are warmly recognised and thanked throughout the event.


There may be additional thank-you events or certificates for those who support multiple shifts over the summer.

 

Shifts are flexible, and volunteers can choose weekends and shift durations that work best for them.

Travel details

Public Transport Information to Silverburn (for Volunteers)

Silverburn is well served by buses from Glasgow city centre and surrounding areas.

First Glasgow bus routes 3, X8, and 10 stop directly at Silverburn Bus Station.


McGill’s Buses also run services to Silverburn, including routes 3, 6, 49, and 374.


The X8 route is a fast and popular option from Glasgow city centre, taking around 20–25 minutes.


Trains are available to Priesthill & Darnley Station, which is about a 20-minute walk from the centre.


Free car parking is available at the venue for those who prefer to drive, accessible from the M77 at Junction 2 (postcode: G53 6EW).


Travel expenses

Volunteers can claim travel expenses for attending shifts at Silverburn.

Travel by public transport is reimbursed with proof of purchase (e.g. bus or train ticket).

Volunteers using their own car can claim mileage at 45 pence per mile.
