NHS Alcohol Step Down Unit Befriender

In this volunteer role, you will support our NHS Lothian Aftercare Co-ordinator, who receives referrals from an NHS alcohol step-down unit in the South-West of Edinburgh. The unit supports men and women affected by ARBD, who stay there for several months to recover after detoxing in hospital. ARBD (Alcohol Related Brain Damage) is the term that is used to describe a range of symptoms such as: difficulty remembering, difficulty concentrating, feeling confused, irritated, or having difficulty making choices and decisions.

As a Volunteer Befriender, you’ll be matched with an individual and provide one-to-one companionship — first through visits at the unit and then continuing once they’re discharged and living back in the community. You’ll provide more than just company — you’ll help someone rebuild trust, reduce social isolation, and feel human connection in a safe and supportive way.
