Adviser Volunteer for Glasgow Citizen Advice Bureaux

Volunteer with Glasgow Citizen Advice Bureaux and make a difference in your local community!

What does the Citizens Advice Bureau do?
The Citizens Advice Bureau provides an essential community service, providing free, confidential, and independent advice. We utilise people’s experiences to influence policy and tackle the root cause of problems. Housing, immigration, benefits, and debt are some of the key issues facing our clients.

What training and support will I be offered?
Adviser training is a combination of online and face-to-face sessions. In addition to basic modules covering the key issues, advisers undertake skills training in interviewing and case recording. All trainees spend time in bureau shadowing an experienced adviser.

What does the role of an Adviser involve?
All sorts of people volunteer as advisers and provide free, confidential, and impartial advice.

The role is varied, but some key duties include:

Interviewing clients and explaining available options.
Offering practical help by writing letters, making phone calls, or helping fill in forms.
Referring clients to other agencies if they are better placed to help.

Advice services are delivered face-to-face in offices and outreach settings but also by telephone and email. We ask advisers to commit an average of 6 hours a week.

What will I get from volunteering?
You will develop new skills and obtain a real understanding of how the law and policy affects people’s lives. You will also meet new people, make new friends, and become part of a team embedded in the local community. Your advice will help resolve problems and make a fundamental difference to people’s lives.
