Autism Help Volunteer

Why we want you
Our enquiry and signposting service provides impartial, confidential information, advice and support for autistic people and their families to help them get the support they need. Volunteers provide telephone and email support from their own homes.

What you will be doing
Calling and emailing autistic adults, parents/carers and other enquirers who have contacted the service
Offering accurate and up-to-date information and advice
Helping parents, carers and autistic people get appropriate advice and information on a range of topics
Handling telephone and email enquiries efficiently and appropriately
Promptly recording details of interactions on the service’s database
Dealing appropriately with confidential information and documentation in line with the service’s policies.
The role involves occasional travel to attend our volunteer forums, these are usually held in London, agreed travel and if necessary overnight accommodation will be paid. If travel to these events will be an issue please get in touch as we are able to make reasonable adjustments according to individual needs.

Experience required

commit to giving at least 4 hours of your time per week
have a strong desire to help and the motivation to make a difference
ensure good communication with autistic people, their parents/ carers, other enquirers and with the National Autistic Society team
be reliable, consistent and dependable
be able to clarify what the enquirer is trying to achieve: effective listening skills are essential
be able to self-motivate and work on their own initiative organise, prioritise and manage their own time
have a positive and flexible approach
be able to deal with people, using tact and diplomacy
be able to show empathy while maintaining professionalism and clear boundaries
be able to remain calm, even in stressful situations
have use of own computer or telephone compatible with National Autistic Society systems
be confident using IT (eg Microsoft Word and Outlook)

Frequency & commitment
At least four hours per week (including during training) . You can choose which days suit you around your other commitments. You will need to arrange mutually suitable times for volunteering with your volunteer manager in advance (the days and times you will be dealing with enquiries).

Volunteers (aged 18-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
