Support Volunteer for the After School Club

We are a dedicated team of local residents; our goal is to alleviate symptoms of poverty for families in Girvan and surrounding villages. Our charity was established with the vision of creating a more equitable and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their economic background.
Role - Support volunteer After school club
Outline of the role AYE Girvan is looking for volunteers to support the running of our After school club. AYE Girvan was established in March 2024 to alleviate symptoms of poverty for families in the Girvan and surrounding areas. Supporting working families or families on employability pathways is just one way we are supporting outcomes for families. The after school club is one way and as a volunteers with the after school club you play a key role.
What will the volunteers be expected to do
• Meet AYE Girvan’s playworker at the either Girvan Primary or Sacred Heart Primary schools and walk the children to the Wave Hub, Following a designated route.
• Wear a Hi Vis vest over clothing/jacket when walking with the children. This will be provided by AYE Girvan.
• Be reliable and committed to volunteering when asked. The After school club will operate Monday to Thursday and volunteers needs to be available from 2.45pm depending on the numbers of volunteers a rota will be created based on needs of the after school club and availability of volunteers.
• Have the opportunity to share any skills you might have with the children this could be knitting, crafts, baking, musical instruments, gardening and supporting homework etc
• Promote positive behaviour to all.
• Engage with the children and other adults.
• Maintain a level of confidentially.
• Be aware of possible child protection issues and report anything to a member of AYE Girvan’s staff team.
• Be aware and report any health and safety issues ie, if something gets broken or is dirty.
• As this is a regulated role Volunteers will need to be part of the PVG scheme
• Provide two references.

Benefits to the volunteer:
Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in some physical exercise by walking the children from their school to the Wave Hub. The opportunity to meet with children and other adults building relationships.
Supporting individual confidences:
There will be the opportunity to take part in relevant training and meetings with the manager or Senior.
Volunteers who are parents/carers of school aged children will also be able the child/children with them for free. There will be a limit on the number of children who can attend that way.

Expenses will be paid to volunteers.
The expenses must be agreed with the manager or Senior prior to the volunteer outlaying any monies. Expenses which will be considered are traveling expenses, purchasing an item or items to support an activity/hobby the volunteer would like to share with the children. Receipts will need to be provided for reimbursement.
Where:
Once the children have walked from either Girvan Primary or Sacred Heart Primary school the after school club will be inside at the Wave Hub on Dalrymple street, Girvan. There may be occasions where volunteers may support taking the children with staff on local trips ie to the park or beach.
When:
The after school club will be Monday to Thursday from 2.45 until 4.45pm term time. The volunteers will not need to be there the whole time but will be encouraged to come into the club after walking with the children and spend some time engaging with the children. This could be once a week or serval times a week. A rota will be created so that the volunteers have advanced notice of when they are required to support the after school club.
Support:
The manager of childcare service will be responsible the volunteers. This will be the recruitment, training and regular meetings, provide a rota and ensure PVG checks are completed and references in place before a volunteer can start volunteering with AYE Girvan. In the managers absence the Senior will stand in for the manager.


How to apply/what happens next: Please email [email protected] if you would like to be considered as a volunteer explaining why you would like to volunteer and what skills you have. You will then be invited to attend an informal interview. As this is a regulated role you will be required to become a member of PVG scheme and provide two references before you can start volunteering with the AYE Girvan. There is no cost to joining the PVG scheme as a volunteer.


Experience required

Skills, Attitudes and Experience Volunteers need to be able to support the children walking from their school to the wave hub. Volunteers should be used to being around children and communicating with them. Volunteers may have previous experience of working with children in a similar setting. Volunteers should be open and friendly promoting positive behaviours towards all children and adults. Volunteers may have a hobby or skill which is suitable to share with the children.
