Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Volunteer

The Riding for the Disabled Association gives opportunities for disabled people and people with learning difficulties to enjoy equine activities - riding and carriage driving. Our organisation is based at Carronshore and offer carriage driving, but not riding. This activity is offered to adults (i.e. over 18).
Volunteers are needed to help the disabled adults safely enjoy learning to drive a carriage. They are always accompanied by a qualified coach and two volunteers (three if the person is in a wheelchair). The RDA Volunteers learn to harness the ponies to the carriage, to accompany the carriage on a bicycle, to assist the disabled people on and off the carriage, and to safely load and fix a wheelchair on the carriage. They also enjoy social interactions with the disabled people.

Experience required

Empathy, patience, willingness to interact with various levels of learning difficulty and disability.
Enough fitness to ride a bike for about one mile on the flat. Willingness to learn new skills.
Previous experience with horses is very desirable, but not essential.

The training of the ponies and volunteers continues through the winter months (Oct - April) if the volunteer wishes to attend, when there is opportunity for volunteers to learn to carriage drive, if they wish to. But the volunteer role does not involve them in actual carriage driving with disabled people.
