Pastoral Carer

Pastoral Carers and their therapy dogs (PEACE Teams) visit people in need of support and companionship in Care Homes, on University and College campuses, and in community hubs. PEACE Teams will volunteer for a couple of hours a week/fortnight in order to build relationships with the people they visit. The PEACE dog helps to provide a relaxing environment, while the Pastoral Carer offers both a listening ear and a means of support, happy to talk through any fears or concerns the person may have.

Experience required

Essential: good listening skills, patient, caring, attentive, sensitive, discreet, trustworthy. Potential volunteers are required to have an active Christian faith.
Desirable: experience in pastoral care.

Travel details

We have a room at the Eric Liddell Community Hub, 15 Morningside Road, Edinburgh. There are multiple bus routes that go past Holy Corner. It would also be possible for volunteers to visit Care Homes close to their own homes if more convenient.

Travel expenses

No expenses.

Training details

All PEACE Pastoral Carers receive training in Mental Health First Aid, attentive listening and dementia awareness. Volunteers will also become members of the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme. New PEACE Pastoral Carers will have an induction session with an existing Pastoral Carer. Each volunteer is also advised of a main contact at PEACE or at the organisation they are visiting should they wish to discuss any concerns.
