Befriender

Purpose of the Role:
To provide companionship and social support to individuals aged 65 and over who have full mental capacity but are experiencing loneliness or social isolation. This service aims to help older adults reconnect with their local community, support emotional wellbeing, and reduce feelings of isolation.
Key Responsibilities:
Visit clients in their own homes for friendly conversation and company.
Accompany clients on short local outings, such as to a café, park, or cinema, supporting social interaction and engagement with the community.
Build a positive, supportive relationship while respecting the client’s independence and decision-making.
Offer a listening ear and empathetic conversation to support the client’s emotional and mental wellbeing.
Maintain clear boundaries and confidentiality at all times.
Report any concerns to the service coordinator and follow safeguarding and health and safety procedures.
Participate in basic training and maintain regular contact with the volunteer manager.

Who the Service is For:
Individuals aged 65 or over
Living independently in the local community
Experiencing loneliness or social isolation
Have full mental capacity and are able to make informed decisions

Skills & Qualities Needed:
• Friendly, respectful, and compassionate
• A good communicator and listener
• Dependable and consistent in attendance
• Non-judgmental and able to build rapport with older individuals
• Comfortable working independently with appropriate support
