Visitor Welcome Volunteer (REAPER)

The Scottish Fisheries Museum is looking for enthusiastic people who will assist current volunteers in providing a warm welcome for visitors of all ages to REAPER FR 958 while the boat is moored at Anstruther Harbour. Volunteers will help to ensure that members of the public have a safe and enjoyable visit to the boat while encouraging them to find out more at the Scottish Fisheries Museum. This role would suit people with an interest in museums, historic fishing boats or local history. It offers a fantastic opportunity to develop visitor services skills and meet new people in a friendly and supportive setting.
The key tasks will include:
-Welcoming the public onboard, explaining that REAPER is open and free to visit.
-Explaining basic safety procedures to visitors such as how to access the boat from the pontoon and navigate ladders to and from the cabin.
-Learning more about REAPER and historic fishing boats by chatting to experienced volunteers. Passing this knowledge on to visitors as you gain confidence.
-Encouraging people to visit the museum.
-Help record visitor numbers.

Experience required

An interest in learning about REAPER FR 958 and the Scottish Fisheries Museum.
-desire to help promote all aspects of the Scottish Fisheries Museum.
-willingness to undertake training as required.
-willingness to follow health and safety procedures, maintaining a safe environment for all volunteers and visitors to the boat.
-interest in meeting new people.
-Good communication skills and a desire to develop these in a supportive setting.

Travel details

This volunteering opportunity will take place across from the Scottish Fisheries Museum / Anstruther Harbour, Harbourhead, Anstruther, Fife, KY10 3AB.
REAPER F958 will be moored at the harbour.
There is a bus stop directly outside the museum. Buses to and from Anstruther are operated by Stagecoach including the X60 service between Edinburgh and St Andrews and the 95 service between St Andrews and Leven. Both buses run hourly. There is one public pay and display car park within 150 yards of the museum with 2 disabled bays; this is pay and display from April to September. There is no charge for Blue Badge holders

Travel expenses

Public Transport is capped at a Northeast Fife Stagecoach Day Rider.
Fuel is reimbursed at 45p per mile and capped at 15 miles per trip.

Support
Training details

The volunteer will be given a brief tour of the Scottish Fisheries Museum, and of REAPER. They will be introduced to key staff and shown on-site facilities. The volunteer will be given access to the Scottish Fisheries Museum’s online Volunteer Knowledge Base, where its policies and procedures are kept. The volunteer will be inducted into the specifics of the role on their first day and will receive ongoing training and support. Ongoing training and support will be provided by the Fleet & Volunteer Coordinator.
