Local History Assistant (Lewis)

Role Purpose
To support access to local history collections and resources, helping users explore heritage material while ensuring safe and respectful use of collections.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist users with local history resources and enquiries
• Help organise and preserve local history materials
• Support digitisation or indexing projects (where appropriate)
• Promote library heritage collections
Skills and Attributes
• Interest in local history or heritage
• Organised and careful with materials
• Good communication skills
• Respect for confidentiality and data protection
Training details
The volunteer will liaise with a nominated member of staff at their local library, who will guide them through their induction, and will be the first point of contact for any issues, questions, or problems should they arise.
Restrictions Minimum age: 17
Safeguarding Responsibilities
• Maintain professional boundaries with all users
• Follow safeguarding procedures when assisting vulnerable adults
• Avoid working one-to-one in isolated situations
• Report any concerns to staff promptly
PVG and Recruitment
• PVG membership is not normally required, unless the role develops into regulated work
• Safeguarding awareness training is required

Experience required
