Meal Maker

The Food Train support older people to eat well, age well and live well at home. Our volunteers help make daily lives easier for older people in Scotland by providing vital regular support to those facing the challenges of ageing.

Meal Makers is a neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people who enjoy cooking with an older person who lives in their local community and would really appreciate a home cooked meal and some friendly company.

As a Meal Maker Volunteer, you will prepare an extra portion of food in your own home and deliver it to your 'Diner' at a time that suits you both. Designed to be a fun volunteering opportunity based on an everyday activity, Meal Makers aims to tackle malnutrition and loneliness in older adults (55+), who struggle with the ability or motivation to prepare a home-cooked meal for themselves.

Experience required

No previous catering experience is required, we just ask that volunteers have an interest in cooking and a friendly disposition!

Travel details

Meal Maker cooks will be matched with an older person nearby, ideally within a 5-10 min walk . Although a volunteer can indicate if they are willing to travel further.

Frequency & commitment
This opportunity is extremely flexible. The time required to complete would be roughly 2 hours weekly or fortnightly and times are agreed between yourself and the 'diner'. We try where possible to match people locally so this can be easily fitted in alongside your other commitments.
