Pantry Volunteer

Purpose:
The Pantry Volunteer assists in the day-to-day operations of the food pantry, ensuring that the community receives the food and resources they need in a timely and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities:


  1. Food Distribution:
    o Help prepare and distribute food to individuals and families according to pantry guidelines.
    o Assist clients with selecting groceries or filling food orders.
    o Ensure that all food items are distributed in an organised and respectful manner.

  2. Inventory Management:
    o Help sort, label, and organize food donations.
    o Assist in checking the expiration dates and condition of donated goods.
    o Stock shelves and maintain a clean and orderly pantry environment.

  3. Client Interaction:
    o Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating compassion, empathy, and understanding to clients.
    o Ensure clients feel welcome and supported while receiving assistance.
    o Answer questions and provide information about available resources.

  4. Food Safety and Hygiene:
    o Follow food safety guidelines to ensure the proper handling, storage, and distribution of food items.
    o Maintain cleanliness of pantry space, including sweeping, mopping, and sanitising surfaces as needed.

  5. Record Keeping:
    o Help with client registration or documentation of services provided, if applicable.



  1. Special Events/Drives:
    o Support food drives or special events organized by the pantry, including organising, sorting, or distributing donated items.


Experience required

• Required:
o Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service.
o Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
o Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
o Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and respecting the dignity of all clients.
o Physical ability to lift and move boxes of food (if applicable).
o Willingness to undergo any necessary training (e.g., food handling, safety protocols).
• Preferred:
o Prior volunteer experience in food distribution, community service, or related fields.
o Knowledge of food safety standards.
