Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust

Built in 1902, REAPER FR958 is a Fifie Sailing Herring Drifter and member of the National Historic Fleet. The REAPER has been restored to her traditional sailing rig and is also fitted with an engine. She requires both regular maintenance and periodic repair to keep her seaworthy. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills while learning about traditional boats and Scottish maritime history.
Key tasks will include:
· General maintenance such as washing down the decks, cleaning the boat and pontoon area, airing the spaces below deck, checking water levels
· Running repairs such as exterior painting, oiling, rigging,
· Maintaining the engine and associated machinery e.g. gear box, compressor, steering gear, generator, emergency pump
· Monitoring the condition and stocks of equipment e.g. ropes, fenders, fuel
· Monitoring and reporting any REAPER maintenance issues
· Adhering to the Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust’s policies and to standards of best practice.
Experience required
he role requires:
· An interest in learning about REAPER FR 958 and the Scottish Fisheries Museum.
· A degree of physical fitness
· Experience in or a willingness to learn how to complete a variety of tasks to an agreed Maintenance Management Plan.
· A willingness to undertake training as required.
· A willingness to follow health and safety procedures, maintaining a safe environment for all volunteers and visitors to the pontoon and boat.
Depending on the existing knowledge and interests of the volunteer, you may wish to specialise in one aspect of the role. Previous experience is preferred but not necessarily required as full training and support will be given.
Travel details
The opportunity will take place in Anstruther at the Scottish Fisheries Museum Boatyard and on board REAPER, moored in Anstruther Harbour.
A bus stop is directly outside the museum. Buses to and from Anstruther are operated by Stagecoach including X60 service between Edinburgh and St. Andrews and 95 service between St Andrews and Leven. Both buses run hourly.
There are two public pay and display car parks in 150 yards of the museum with 4 disabled bays. Both car parks are pay and display from April to September and are free during the rest of the year. There is no charge for blue badge holders.
Travel expenses
The Museum will reimburse any pre-approved travel on receipt of a completed claim form. Travel to/from the museum via public transport is capped at the cost of a Stagecoach North East Fife DayRider. Travel to/from the museum via car is capped at 45p per mile travelled up to 15 miles per trip.
Support
Training details
Volunteers will be given an induction and full training for all aspects of the role by the Scottish Fisheries Museum team. They will be supported in their role by their supervisor and by the SFM Boats Club whose members have many years’ experience in maintaining and crewing the REAPER.
Restrictions
Minimum age: 18
This role involves physical labour.
Availability
Volunteers (aged 18-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
