Library Volunteer

The Scottish Fisheries Museum is looking for an enthusiastic person who will assist the Collections team by helping to maintain and operate the museum library. The reference library is open by appointment and houses books, journals, photographs and reports telling a rich history of the fishing communities of Scotland from the 19th Century to the present. You’ll be cataloguing new acquisitions, maintaining library systems, and supporting internal and external research enquiries. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to develop IT and research skills, as well as to learn about this fascinating part of Scottish history.

Previous experience is not required as full training and support will be given.

Experience required

This volunteer opportunity requires:

-An interest in history

-A good eye for detail


-Experience in or a willingness to learn how to use basic IT packages as well as how to handle and catalogue books, journals and papers.


-Knowledge of the Scottish fishing industry would be advantageous but not essential.


Travel details

This volunteering opportunity will take place at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, Harbourhead, Anstruther, Fife, KY10 3AB.

Travel expenses

The museum will reimburse any pre-approved travel or out-of-pocket expenses incurred for the purpose of volunteering. This includes:

-Travel to/from external training.

-Travel undertaken in the course of volunteering (e.g. outreach activity at an external venue).


-Travelling to/from the museum while volunteering.


Support
Training details

Volunteers will be given an induction and training for all aspects of the role by the Scottish Fisheries Museum Team. They will be supported in their role by the Head Curator as their supervisor and key point of contact.

Minimum age: 16
The levels of basic comprehension needed to assist with answering research enquiries.
